International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Tips of Becoming an Inclusive Employer

To celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which takes place on the 3rd December 2024, FIT have put together some important tips to help create more inclusive workplaces.

These tips are brought to you as part of the Cuimsiú Programme, an initiative set up to support disabled, specifically neurodivergent candidates, on their pathway to employment, while also supporting employers. The FIT Cuimsiú Programme is funded by Pobal as part of the WorkAbility: Inclusive Pathways to Employment Programme.

If you have missed any of the previous tip sheets from World Kindness Day or from FIT’s collaboration with AHEAD then don’t forget to have a read of those after this blog post.

Did you know?

Many of the supports employees need to succeed in their role do not incur any cost to the employer. Many supports are readily available, or require simple changes to workplace practices. For those supports that do incur a cost, there are grants readily available. For more information on this, email nicolelonican@fit.ie

Become a more inclusive employer:

Communication within the workplace is crucial, and employers can create more inclusive workplaces by following these four simple steps:

  • Conduct an accessibility audit of your physical and digital environments, to identify and eliminate barriers for employees with disabilities
  • Provide Disability Awareness Training and equip staff at all level with training on disability rights and inclusion
  • Collaborate with employees with disabilities to identify areas for improvement in the workplace
  • Review and update policies on recruitment, retention and accommodation to ensure they are all in line with the UNCRPD and national laws.
