A first of its kind programme in Ireland

Fastrack into Information Technology (FIT) is taking a proactive step in the Consumer Electronics space that aims to address the shortage of Consumer Electronics Service & Repair Technicians in Ireland through the development & implementation of a ‘Consumer Electronics Service & Repair Technician’ training course, an innovative first of its kind programme in Ireland. This new programme will provide a curriculum template for essential training to combat the skills gap and potentially align with future ‘right to repair’ laws. This program seeks to bolster environmental sustainability while addressing the scarcity of skilled workers by aligning with multiple features of the circular economy including; This pilot aligns itself with multiple features of the circular economy including:
  • The need to reduce waste generation and the presence of hazardous substances in materials & products.
  • It will encourage remanufacturing, refurbishment & repurposing of products & repair & reuse of products/materials.
  • It includes the use of ICT tools to extend the life of products and assets & ensure waste is valued and closes the loop.

Creating a strand of newly qualified repair technicians

Fastrack into Information Technology is endeavouring to solve the current challenge for the Consumer Electronics sector, namely the lack of Consumer Electronic Service Technicians and limited training and career pathway opportunities to encourage new recruits into the sector. FIT with the support of recognised Industry partners is developing and initiating the first repair course to address the issue of Consumer Electronics preventive maintenance, repair & reuse in Ireland and work to support a more circular and sustainable economy.

“While the EU focuses on extending repair availability of technology products and driving circular economy initiatives, there is a growing demand for electronic and repair technicians. I’m honoured to be part of a committee with technical service experts who share a common goal - to break down the barriers for those considering a career in the repair sector. It has always been an extremely important industry, but it is extremely relevant now more than ever”
