College isn’t the only route: Alternative career paths after the Leaving Cert

Received your Leaving Cert results and wondering what’s next? You are not alone. Across the country there are thousands of students wondering: “Should I got to college, or what other options are out there?”. 

There are now more pathways than ever to build a successful future, especially in the tech industry where skills are in high demand. FIT (Fastrack into Information Technology) offer a more practical and affordable route, with a range of tech apprenticeship and traineeship programmes. These fully funded programmes are designed to help school leavers gain real experience with a leading company, earn recognised qualifications and get paid for the entire duration.  

If you are exploring alternative career paths, then here are some alternative career paths after that Leaving Cert that you can apply for now: 

Computer Networking Apprenticeship 

Applications are now open for the next Computer Networking Apprenticeship, starting in-person in Cork, September 2025.  

This two-year Tech Apprenticeship programme combines college-based learning and on-the-job training giving learners a well-rounded experience. With modules such as Network Fundamentals, Intermediate IT Support and Cloud Technology Implementation and Maintenance, learners will earn a Level 6 QQI qualification upon completion of the programme. 

Typical job titles for graduates of the Computer Networking Apprenticeship include Network Engineer, Data Centre Technician and Systems Engineer – roles that are currently in high demand within the sector.

Cybersecurity Apprenticeship 

Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in Ireland, with skilled professionals in high demand. The Cybersecurity Apprenticeship programme can help you get the skills and qualifications you need to kick start your career in this field. 

Applications are now open for the next Cybersecurity Apprenticeship intake in Kerry, starting in-person October 2025. This two-year programme includes modules such as Cybersecurity in Operating Systems: Linux & Windows, Applied Cybersecurity: Threat Response and Secure Architecture and learners will earn a Level 6 QQI qualification upon completion. IFIT: All Female Software Development Apprenticeship 

FIT are now accepting applications nationwide for the all-female Software Development Apprenticeship programme starting in October 2025. This two-year, dedicated all-female programme is a unique opportunity for females nationwide to kick start their career and gain a qualification in Software Development. 

Like all Tech Apprenticeship programmes, it combines on-the-job training and off-the-job learning, allowing learners to earn a salary while gaining industry-recognized qualifications. Learn more about the salary guidelines and entry requirements here

Advanced Manufacturing Traineeships 

Prefer more hands-on, practical work? There are two traineeship programmes set to take place in Ballina this year, with industry-led training and real-world skills that employers need right now. 

  • Introduction to Manufacturing Processes (L4) 

FIT are now recruiting for this upcoming Level 4 Traineeship, starting in Ballina, Co. Mayo, September 2025. With no previous experience required, this fully funded programme is suitable for anyone aged 18+ interested in the manufacturing industry.

  • Manufacturing Technician Maintenance Skills (L6) 

FIT are now recruiting for this upcoming Level 6 traineeship, starting in Ballina, Co. Mayo, November 2025. Learners will get the opportunity to complete modules in Electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Mechanical Maintenance Skills.
