As the Leaving Cert approaches, most of the focus is naturally on exams, results, and getting through the next few weeks.
But for many parents, there’s another question in the background: “What comes after this and what’s the right choice for my child?”
For years, many parents and their kids automatically thought: “college”, but today, things are different and there are now more options to consider.
A Changing Landscape After the Leaving Cert
The reality for today’s school leavers is that there is no longer just one “default” pathway. Alongside college, more students are now exploring Apprenticeship and Traineeship routes, particularly in areas like technology, where skills and experience are in high demand. These pathways offer practical and structured routes into employment and for many students, this can be a better fit than a traditional academic route.
What Are Tech Apprenticeships?
Tech apprenticeships combine college-based learning with on-the-job learning over four key areas: Software Development, Cybersecurity, Computer Networking and a new Data Analytics (subject to QQI validation).
The programmes are all 2 years, where apprentices build practical, in-demand skills, gain an industry recognised level 6 qualification and earn a salary from day one.
This structured approach allows students to develop confidence, independence, and career-ready experience from an early stage.
Who might this suit?
· Students who prefer practical, hands-on learning
· Those who want to start working sooner
· Students who are motivated by real-world environments

What Are Traineeships?
Traineeships offer a shorter, more flexible route into the workforce. Typically completed in around 1 year, traineeships:
· Build foundational technical skills
· Include structured learning and support
· Help students progress into employment or further training
They are often ideal for students who:
· Are still exploring their long-term direction
· Want to gain momentum after school
· Benefit from a practical introduction to a career area Hear from some of our learners here.
Cúimsiú – Inclusive Pathways Programme
Every student learns differently and some may need a more supported pathway.
The Cúimsiú programme is an initiative set up from FIT designed to support neurodiverse and disabled learners on a pathway to tech employment that works for them.
The programme aims to help learners:
· Build confidence and independence
· Develop practical and life-ready skills
· Provide a structured, supportive environment
