Creating a new generation of skilled repair technicians

FIT, WEEE Ireland, and the White Goods Association have come together to create a curriculum and formal career pathway for field service technicians to attract new entrants and create a steady supply into the sector to address a growing requirement with regard to maintenance, repair and recycling of white goods.

This initiative will help to kickstart a change in the electrical repair culture in Ireland with this first-of-a-kind training programme, designed to free the bottleneck that has arisen, with no new technicians due to limited access to structured training programmes. It will open up a new and rewarding career for women and men who have interest in prolonging the life-cycle of our white goods in the interest of sustainability, reduced waste and environmental wellbeing career in the technology sector.

This initiative is supported by a grant from the CIRCULÉIRE Innovation fund. CIRCULÉIRE is Ireland’s first industry-led innovation network dedicated to accelerating the circular economy.

About the project

The project will be run by FIT with the support of Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) in a new state-of-the art training centre in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath. Participants will complete a 36-week training programme which incorporates an extensive work placement. White Goods Association members have agreed to support the 12-week work experience component of the course.

"To create a truly circular economy where products are kept in use for longer, we need skilled technicians. The longer we can extend the life of our appliances and keep resources in circulation the more we can reduce waste."
Elizabeth O'Reilly
Head of Environmental Compliance and Membership, WEEE Ireland
"With this course we hope to educate a new generation of skilled repair engineers and keep perfectly repairable electrical appliances in use for longer."
Ian Collins
White Goods Association and Commercial Director, Beko
“Capacity building and upskilling is key to accelerating Ireland’s transition to the circular economy. CIRCULÉIRE is delighted to support this industry-accredited and standards-based repair training programme which will transform the Irish White Goods’ repair sector.”
