Apprenticeships vs. College: Here’s what you need to know

As Leaving Cert results day approaches, many students continue to weigh up their options for the future. More young people are discovering that apprenticeships can offer a faster, more affordable, and more direct route to a successful career – particularly if you are considering a career in Ireland’s growing tech sector.

If you are deciding between the traditional college route and tech apprenticeships, then here’s what you should consider.

No Fees & Getting Paid to Learn

With a FIT Tech Apprenticeship, training is completely free – there are no tuition fees. You start to earn a salary from day one, allowing you to build financial independence instead of building debt. Learn about Tech Apprenticeship Salary Guidelines here

Unlike the tech apprenticeship route, most colleges in Ireland charge students’ tuition fees annually, with students face fees of up to €3,000 for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Course Duration

Most undergraduate college courses take between three and four years to complete.

FIT’s Tech Apprenticeships programmes are just two years (24 months), giving you a faster route to your qualification and to your career.

Real Work Experience from Day One

Work placements in college courses can range from three to nine months, and some programmes don’t offer any at all.

With a FIT Tech Apprenticeship, you will work with leading Irish companies throughout the two-year programme. In this blended learning approach, tech apprentices spend 30% of their time in college based learning, and 70% of their time gaining hands-on experience with their employer. This approach allows you to learn in-demand skills directly from industry professionals, and by the time you graduate, you will already have two years of relevant experience on your CV.

Flexible Applications

If you are thinking of going to college, applications for undergraduate courses are usually made through the CAO. Applications open for a specific timeframe between November and February each year (May for late applications, at an additional cost).

Applications for FIT Tech Apprenticeship programmes are much more flexible, with multiple intakes annually across all programmes. While you can also apply for a Tech Apprenticeship through the CAO, learners can apply any time of the year through the FIT website at www.fit.ie. There are no points required, but places are extremely competitive and applicants must ensure they meet the entry requirements.
