Course Aims

The aim of the course is to provide learners with expertise, experience and knowledge in accounting, in the areas such as financial accounting and budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll and tax returns for various types of business.

Accounting Technicians will possess the knowledge, skills and competencies to either work on their own or alongside professional accountants. They will find work in all types of organisations and are widely employed throughout the public sector, industry and in private accounting practices.
The Participants on this course also get the opportunity to commence to up skill in the Information Technology and Communications areas.

Education: Applicants who are over 21, are considered as mature students and there are no entry requirements. For those under 21 the following entry requirements apply: Leaving Certificate with five passes in Ordinary Level papers. (Passes to include English/ and either Mathematics or Accountancy) or Leaving Certificate with four passes of which at least two are in Higher Level papers. (Passes to include English and either Mathematics or Accountancy)or Learners who are sitting the Applied Leaving Certificate should contact the Registrar( directly for advice on whether they are eligible or Learners under 21 who have successfully completed a nationally recognized qualification such as QQI, QQI (Level 5), QCA or a BTEC National Diploma may also be eligible to apply.

Aptitude: Good verbal / numerical / clerical aptitude

Previous Experience: Previous experience in book-keeping and / or accountancy desirable.
-Eligibility criteria are determined by the Department of Education and Skills.

To qualify for VTOS a person must:
- be at least 21 years of age at the commencement of the course,

- be in receipt of an unemployment payment or signing for credits for at least 6 months*.

Also, the course must be provided or approved by the local VEC for the purposes of the VTOS scheme.

A limited number of places are available to persons in receipt of One Parent Family Payment, Disability Allowance, Illness Benefit, Blind Pension, Invalidity Pension, Deserted Wife's Benefit/Allowance, Widow's/Widower's Contributory/Non Contributory Pension and Prisoner's Wife's Allowance and to qualified spouses/partners of persons eligible to participate in VTOS.

Periods spent on VTOS, FS training schemes, Community Employment, Job Initiative, Youthreach or time in prison can count towards the 6 month qualifying period.
