Tech Apprentice Welfare Officer

Location: FIT Ltd, 7a Bellevue Industrial Estate, Glasnevin, Dublin 11.

Salary:                                     

Working Hours: 39 hours per week. Typical working day is 8.30am – 5.00 pm but the post holder will be required to work outside normal working hour (i.e. evenings and weekends) on occasion.

Reporting to: Director of ICT Associate Professional Tech Apprenticeship Programme.

 

Role & Context

FIT is the National Coordinator for the new NFQ Level 6 Tech Apprenticeship: ICT Associate Professional with a target intake of 250 Apprentices in 2018 rising to 1,000 by 2021. The Apprentice Welfare Officer will assist with the successful deployment of the ICT Associate Professional Apprenticeship Programme being implemented by FIT in collaboration with the National Apprenticeship Council, SOLAS, Education and Training Boards, ETBI, Technology Ireland and the wider tech sector. In particular, the Apprentice Welfare Officer looks after the welfare and effective progression of participating apprentices and is responsible for ensuring that necessary processes and safeguards are in place to monitor apprentice progression, welfare and development throughout the lifecycle of the programme.

The main focus of the role will be:

To develop and maintain links with apprenticeship participants to ensure they adhere to programme requirements and achieve their apprenticeship award.

To identify and source suitable candidates for Apprenticeship vacancies.

To develop and maintain an Apprentice Welfare Support Service.

To support the development of Apprenticeship progression pathways within both the sponsoring companies and externally, as required.

Identify stakeholder agencies which can support the promotion of the Tech Apprenticeship programme and/or can provide further training and career development opportunities to Apprentices on the successful completion of the Tech Apprenticeship Programme.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide initial advice and guidance to participants during the application process.
  2. Equip potential apprentices with pre-screening and interview techniques to ensure suitable candidates are presented to potential employers
  3. Manage the ‘apprenticeship applicants’ and act as a mentor and guide for apprenticeship learners in a professional manner and direct learners for further support as and when necessary.
  4. To support employers by providing high quality Apprenticeship candidates for interview.
  5. Ensure accurate matching of prospective candidates with potential employers.
  6. Ensure such candidates attend interviews with nominated employers and track progress to confirm fulfilment of in-work training requirements.
  7. To liaise with relevant managers and team members regarding Apprentice welfare and development.
  8. To work with the Apprentice, nominated training personnel, and mentors to ensure required certification attainment and completion of all related Apprenticeship programme requirements within the timeframe required.
  9. Support young people into Pre-Apprenticeships / Traineeships programmes which may act as a precursor to participation in the Tech Apprenticeship.
  10. Manage and build a database of suitable applicants.
  11. Report regularly on apprenticeship welfare priorities for the Director of Apprenticeships as required.
  12. To attend external locations to promote apprenticeship programmes to schools / colleges, FET / Adult Education & Training facilities and other relevant third party entities.
  13. To work to ensure continuous Quality Improvement and Service Excellence.
  14. Undertake such duties as may be required commensurate with the level of responsibility and nature of the role as discussed with your line manager.

Person Specification

The post holder will possess the following essential attributes.

  • Qualified Third Level qualification or equivalent and/or relevant experience in a related field such Welfare Support, Skills Development, Mentoring, Personal Development etc.
  • Proven expertise and employment background in a vocational education environment
  • Experience in the design and implementation of quality assurance and enhancement processes and procedures in a FET context
  • Excellent communication skills, including a high standard of written and spoken English
  • Ability to meet competing deadlines whilst working on a range of activities, prioritising workload as necessary
  • An ability to work with a range of people and external bodies associated with the apprenticeship programme
  • A knowledge and understanding of the role and agenda of QQI and other accrediting or awarding bodies as applicable
  • An empathy with the needs of apprentices, both first-time college students and mature entrants
  • High standard of customer service and confident in approach and demeanour
  • Experience of working with a broad range of stakeholders, at various levels within and external to an organisation, and the ability to foster and maintain positive and productive working relationships
