Location: FIT Ltd, 7a Bellevue Industrial Estate, Glasnevin, Dublin 11.


Working Hours: 39 hours per week. Typical working day is 8.30am – 5.00 pm but the post holder will be required to work outside normal working hour (i.e. evenings and weekends) on occasion.

Reporting to: Director of ICT Associate Professional Tech Apprenticeship Programme.

Role & Context

FIT is the National Coordinator for the new NFQ Level 6 Tech Apprenticeship: ICT Associate Professional with a target intake of 250 Apprentices in 2018 rising to 1,000 by 2021. The Qualification and Certification Officer will assist in the successful implementation and deployment of ICT Associate Professional Apprenticeship Programme, the new national Tech Apprenticeship programme being implemented by FIT in collaboration with the National Apprenticeship Council, SOLAS, Education and Training Boards, ETBI, ICT Ireland and the wider tech sector. In particular the Qualification and Certification Officer will focus on ensuring that the highest standards are adhered to in attaining the certification and work practice associated with the Tech Apprenticeship programme.  They are also responsible for certifying necessary processes and safeguards are in place for monitoring apprentice validation and certification attainment to ensure their successful conclusion of the apprenticeship programme.

The main focus of the role will be:

To monitor and review Apprenticeship learner’s certification attainment during the programme to ensure they achieve the apprenticeship programme award.

To ensure programme components are adhered to by all key interests namely the apprentice, tutors, mentors and employers.

To ensure demonstration of learning components of the Tech Apprenticeship such as the Apprentice Log Book and Professional Recognition Award (PRA) are completed in a timely fashion to the required standard.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under the guidance of the Apprenticeship Program Director, review each student’s progression and eventual completion of all certification / portfolio requirements necessary for the successful attainment of the ICT Associate Professional Tech Apprenticeship programme
  2. Work with the Program Director to administer and oversee the completion of work-based learning (practicum) and off-the-job components (teaching) of participating apprentices to required standards. This includes overseeing completion of work-based learning requirements, addressing issues/concerns relating application of learning in workplace components of the programme, and collecting/analysing both formative and summative evaluations of work experience modules and well as completion of necessary exams and assignments.
  3. Provide apprentices with the necessary information to successfully complete and fulfil all fieldwork / work-based learning components required for the successful completion of the Tech Apprenticeship programme.
  4. Review and evaluate work-based learning (practicum / application learning) coursework components and provide appropriate feedback / information to the Programme Director.
  5. Schedule and advertise pre-apprenticeship information meetings with regard to standards and certification requirements and eligibility criteria.
  6. Work with the Apprenticeship Team to review and update all necessary award specifications and related material / handbooks as required in consultation with associated awarding authorities.
  7. Distribute all necessary information and materials relating to both on and off-the-job components of the programme to teachers, mentors, and employers along with directors/principals at affiliated sites.
  8. Address queries from tutors, apprentices, employers and other key stakeholders with regard to certification requirement and standards.
  9. Assist the Director of Apprenticeships in the analysis of programme progression data including completions and standards attained. In this regard, databases monitoring progression and certification reports are to be maintained.
  10. Ensure that all certification and standards information related to the apprenticeship programme is accurate and up-to-date.
  11. Comply fully with all relevant certifying authorities’ policies and practice and work to ensure continuous quality improvement and service excellence.


Person Specification

The post holder will possess the following essential attributes.

  • Tertiary Qualification or equivalent and/or relevant experience.
  • Proven expertise and employment background in a vocational education environment.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of quality assurance and enhancement processes and procedures in a FET context.
  • Excellent communication skills, including a high standard of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to meet competing deadlines whilst working on a range of activities, prioritising workload as necessary.
  • An ability to work with a range of people and external bodies associated with the apprenticeship programme.
  • A knowledge and understanding of the role of QQI and other awarding bodies as applicable.
  • High standard of customer service and confident in approach and demeanour.
  • Experience of working with a broad range of stakeholders, at various levels within and external to the organisation, and the ability to foster and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
  • An advocate of employee engagement and a driver for change and continuous improvement.
