Location: FIT Ltd, 7a Bellevue Industrial Estate, Glasnevin, Dublin 11.


Working Hours: 39 hours per week. Typical working day is 8.30am – 5.00 pm but the post holder will be required to work outside normal working hour (i.e. evenings and weekends) on occasion.

Role & Context

FIT is the National Coordinator for the new NFQ Level 6 Tech Apprenticeship: ICT Associate Professional with a target intake of 250 Apprentices in 2018 rising to 1,000 by 2021. The Data Protection officer will oversee FIT’s Data Protection processes and requirements, identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes to ensure compliance. A key area of focus for the role will be supporting staff in relation to all data protection related queries and incidents, ensuring that the new Tech Apprenticeship is appropriately prepared and fully compliant with general Data Protection Regulation, current legislation and best practice.

The main focus of the role will be:

To oversee and ensure that the ICT AP programme is fully compliant throughout and that apprentices attain the award in accordance with all associated data protection regulation.

To advise, support and monitor staff on all data protection related activity, where relevant, in the implementation of the Tech Apprenticeship as dictated by regulation.

To ensure support components such as the Apprentice Log Book and Professional Recognition Award (PRA) are completed in a timely fashion and in compliance with data protection regulation.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Data Protection – Implementation of requirements of National / EU Data Protection Regulation.
  2. Perform a Gap Analysis between current systems and processes and the relevant Data Protection Legislation and best practice – advising and addressing any such deficiencies in real-time.
  3. Liaise with relevant stakeholders in the design and delivery of appropriate data management policies and procedures with regard to the effective roll-out of the Tech Apprenticeship.
  4. Demonstrate strong organisational skills when guiding and advising data protection compliance related activities.
  5. Liaise with the Apprenticeship Director, Registrar and key stakeholders in order to design and deploy appropriate data processor contracts and data protection policies, where required, taking full account of current and forthcoming regulatory and legislative requirements.
  6. Develop and implement systems in order to monitor policy adherence including comprehensive staff training on data protection obligations in areas such as social media, marketing, website content and other strategic client initiatives.
  7. Responsible for management of data protection incidents
  8. Develop and implement a data governance framework
  9. Assist with corporate governance processes as required from time to time, including Freedom of Information, statutory filings and external correspondence.

Other Duties

Any other duties within the general requirements of the assigned role by the Registrar for the ICT Associate Professional Tech Apprentice programme from time-to-time.   


Person Specification

The post holder will possess the following essential attributes.

  • Relevant Third Level Qualification and or substantial experience in a Data Protection or similar compliance based role.
  • A proven track record in translating legal and regulatory requirements into practical, operational solutions.
  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant data protection systems and privacy requirements.
  • Ability to demonstrate technical knowledge and awareness of current data management practice and communicate them in an accessible manner.
  • Analytical skills / Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • Project Management / High level of organisational skills
  • Organisation Awareness / Team Work
  • Excellent Communication Skills – ability to accurately identify and explain key issues and communicate them in an accessible manner –
  • Understanding of social inclusion issues and the contribution of the community and voluntary sector to local development, inclusion, equality and reconciliation
  • Customer service & support
  • Advanced report writing experience and experience of database management systems and technologies – proficient in MS packages e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, Dynamics, SharePoint portals etc.
  • Full clean Driving License and own transport
