Course Aims

Multimedia with Graphic Design is a one year, level five programme. The aim of this programme is to help learners develop skills in web development, graphic design, photography and animation in a hands-on practical way using industry-standard software. Learners learn how to display their creativity through a variety of interactive media technologies.

Progression: Students may be eligible for entry into a number of Level 7 and 8 degree programmes at various IT's and Universities. Many students have pursued the Animation, VFX and Motion Graphics level 8 or the TV, Radio and New Media Broadcasting level 8 at ITT. Others have applied for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Visual Communications at CIT and First Year Art & Design at LIT with a view to progressing to the Visual Communications - BA (Honours) in Design (Level 8).

Special Features: Linking with industry is an integral part of the course. In the past we have worked with software development companies to design and produce app content. This initiative, to work alongside industry on real-world projects, was shortlisted for a National Adult Learning Award in 2017.


  • Most of the modules are practical in nature and incorporate industry-standard software. There are no exams and most assessments are conducted through written assignments or are project-based.

    • Multimedia Project Development
      Covers the fundamental skills required for Multimedia Production: Pre-production, Post-production, principles of Human Computer Interaction and the soft skills required to communicate with media teams and clients.
    • Multimedia Authoring
      Covers pre-production, production and post-production of a multimedia artefact. Learners work in groups to design app content, and cover areas such as interface design, user testing and prototyping using a variety of authoring technologies and vector graphics packages.
    • Web Page Authoring
      Learners acquire the necessary skills and knowledge of design principles to support the building, testing and refining of Web pages using HTML and CSS.
    • Design Skills
      Learners acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to understand the strategies inherent in the design process and generate creative responses to design briefs. Areas covered are problem solving and researching, generating and developing design solutions to a wide range of briefs.
    • 3D Modelling and Animation
      Learners acquire the relevant skills to model and animate three-dimensional objects / figures using an industry-standard software application. Areas covered include: Modelling Techniques, Materials, Animation Techniques, Cameras and Lighting
    • Digital Photography
      Learners experiment and research digital photography capture and post-production imaging. Areas covered include: The Brief and Visualisation, The Camera, Post-Capture Production, Digital Photographic Storage and Printing, Presentation and Finishing Techniques
    • Computer Illustration Graphics
      Provides the learner with an understanding of illustration graphics concepts, and practical experience in computer graphic design.
    • Teamworking
      Soft skills and competencies to work as an effective member of a team, operating independently while under general direction and within a range of diverse, team-oriented environments. Of particular importance to the creative industries where most roles are collaborative.
    • Work Experience
      Learners seek out and partake in relevant industry work experience and reflect on their learning.
