Course Aims


This course is an excellent starting point for people who wish to pursue careers in the radio broadcasting industry. It’s an entry level course designed to give the participants a comprehensive foundation in a number of the everyday tasks carried out in a radio station. It offers them the opportunity to develop core skills in broadcast pre-production, broadcast production and audio post production. Participants who successfully complete the course may progress to entry levels positions at local, regional and national radio stations or to further education and training programmes.

Modules


  • Preparing for Work – state the rules and safety regulations of the training location. Produce a structured and logical curriculum vitae and complete an effective job application form. Practice and review interviewing skills and techniques and develop a realistic and focused career plan. Identify appropriate employment or further education or training programmes in line with a career plan.
  • Researching, Recording and Presenting Information – use a variety of research methods to gather information from primary and secondary sources and present research findings using suitable formats.
  • Radio Studio Production – produce radio items using appropriate equipment and standard procedures. Display a broad understanding of how the media industry operates, with particular reference to radio broadcasting roles, radio production roles, how to pitch an idea to a radio station and how to apply for various broadcasting funding schemes.
    • Voice Training, Interviewing Techniques, and Libel and Defamation – use a range of vocal delivery styles to present a diverse blend of “spoken word” programme content using appropriate voice techniques. Plan and prepare for interviews using interview techniques. Identify key aspects of libel/defamation, ethics and representation as they relate to the media sector.
    • In-Company – demonstrate a broad range of occupational competencies in a real work environment.

Requirements


  • Reached the statutory school leaving age.
  • Must have achieved a pass in English at Leaving Certificate level.
  • A proven interest and competence in written and spoken English.
  • A working knowledge of MS Office and related applications.
  • Knowledge and interest in media, broadcast in general, radio, news, current affairs etc.
  • Good communication skills and a pleasant personality.
  • Good attention to detail and a determination to succeed.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A clear speaking voice.
  • An appreciation of the demands and work patterns of a busy radio station newsroom and programme production department.
