Course Aims

Advances in computer, network, cloud and mobile technologies continue to provide job opportunities for people with IT skills and technical acumen.  In Ireland, the ICT sector alone offers a multitude of work opportunities and job advancement prospects for individuals who can demonstrate and deliver a core set of ‘smart-skills’ in IT.

This course is designed to deliver learners with these important smart-skills. A key feature of the course is the combination of ‘hands-on’ learning with direct tuition in the use of industry standard diagnostic/simulation software and forensic tools (Cisco, VMWare, etc.). Learners can expect to receive a solid foundation in the fundamentals of digital systems and acquire the requisite knowledge to build, install, deploy, repair and maintain networked computer systems for use in physical, virtual and cloud-based computing environments special emphasis is placed on developing the learner's problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to help them achieve competency in all areas.

  • Computer Systems Hardware

Designed to provide the learner with the physical skills and knowledge to build and maintain modern computer systems. Special emphasis is placed on developing the learner's troubleshooting skills in effecting hardware diagnostics and repairs.
  • Network Essentials

Provides the learner with a solid foundation in computer networks. Special emphasis is placed on core network principles for both peer and server/client networks. Learners can expect to develop skills in building, securing and deploying various network systems using a variety of hardware, peripherals and software initiated solutions.
  • Operating Systems

Covers the fundamental concepts of operating systems, software installation and system upgrades. Learners will acquire skills in installing, securing and maintaining a variety of popular operating systems. Also includes a primer in first-line preventative maintenance and software forensics.
  • Programming and Design Principles

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence needed to design, code and test structured computer programs using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
  • Maths for Information Technology

The purpose of this award is to certify relevant knowledge, skill and competence to apply a broad range of mathematical skills and tools to a wide variety of contexts especially in software development and/or working with computer systems and networks.
  • Mobile Technologies

Provides the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to configure, utilise and maintain mobile technologies and associated devices. Includes app development for mainstream platforms.
  • Virtualisation Support

Introduction to virtualisation, hypervisors, host/guest systems and simulated networks. The component is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to participate in the implementation and maintenance of a virtualised network infrastructure.
  • Teamworking

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to work as an effective member of a team, operating independently while under general direction and within a range of diverse, team-oriented environments.
  • Work Experience

All students are expected to participate in mandatory work placement in a relevant industrial or commercial environment.

Candidates seeking entry to this programme would ideally have a minimum of a pass in Mathematics at Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate. Some experience with computers and operating systems is desirable but NOT a requirement. All prospective students MUST demonstrate an active interest in working with computer technologies.
